MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
Bilbo's Last Song is a short poem by J.R.R. Tolkien, sung by Bilbo Baggins as he leaves Middle-earth from the Grey Havens at the end of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien gave the poem, and its copyright, to his secretary Joy Hill in 1970.
It first appeared in a Dutch translation in 1973 and in English on posters in 1974, the British one illustrated by Pauline Baynes. In 1990 it was published as a picture book with paintings by Baynes showing Bilbo, Frodo and the Elves riding to the Havens and sailing West, with smaller scenes from The Hobbit.
Aboard the ship leaving the Grey Havens, old Bilbo says goodbye to Middle-earth in this short poem by Tolkien, illustrated by Pauline Baynes.
