MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
Middle-earth Timeline

Not every Middle-earth adaptation belongs to Peter Jackson's film continuity. This timeline gathers the series, films, games and stage works that tell their own version of Tolkien's world, placed by the in-universe date of their story.

  • Series: The Rings of Power on Prime Video (since 2022), set in the Second Age.
  • Animated films: Ralph Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings (1978), which stops after the battle of Helm's Deep, and Rankin/Bass's The Return of the King (1980), made for television.
  • Games: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (2014) and Shadow of War (2017), The Lord of the Rings Online (2007), The Lord of the Rings: Gollum (2023), Return to Moria (2023), set in the Fourth Age, and the cosy life game Tales of the Shire (2025).
  • Stage: the Lord of the Rings musical, first staged in Toronto in 2006 and in London in 2007.

For the Jackson films, see the movie timeline. For all the games together, see the Lord of the Rings games in order.

No. Ralph Bakshi's 1978 film covers The Fellowship of the Ring and part of The Two Towers, ending after the battle of Helm's Deep. The planned second part was never made.
