MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
Romantic Religion: A Study of Barfield, Lewis, Williams and Tolkien is a book by Robert J. Reilly, who taught English at the University of Detroit. It grew out of his doctoral thesis and was published by the University of Georgia Press in 1971. Long out of print, it was reissued by Lindisfarne Books in 2006.
Reilly argues that these four Inklings shared a mature form of romanticism, in which imagination plays a central part and literature and religion are closely bound together. Owen Barfield gives the framework, then separate chapters look at Lewis, Williams and Tolkien. It is often named as the first serious study of the ideas of the Inklings.
An early study of the Inklings, showing how Barfield, Lewis, Williams and Tolkien joined imagination and Christian faith.
