Tolkien and the Critics: Essays on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings was edited by Neil D. Isaacs and Rose A. Zimbardo and published by the University of Notre Dame Press in 1968. It was the first collection of critical essays devoted to The Lord of the Rings, and is often described as a milestone in Tolkien studies.
It gathers early pieces by well-known names, such as C.S. Lewis on The Dethronement of Power and W.H. Auden on The Quest Hero, together with essays by Edmund Fuller, Patricia Meyer Spacks, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Robert J. Reilly and others, on topics ranging from heroism and moral vision to Old English in Rohan and the poetry of the book.
