Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Description

In 1925 J.R.R. Tolkien and his Leeds colleague E.V. Gordon published a scholarly edition of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the great Middle English romance of King Arthur's court. It is not a translation: the book gives the original fourteenth century text, which Tolkien edited, with a long glossary he compiled, an introduction and notes, most of them by Gordon.

Published by the Clarendon Press in Oxford, the edition became a standard text for students for decades. A second edition, revised by Norman Davis, appeared in 1967. Tolkien's own modern English translation of the poem came out much later, in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl and Sir Orfeo.
