MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
Tree and Leaf brings together two texts by Tolkien that belong side by side. The first is On Fairy-Stories, the essay based on the Andrew Lang lecture he gave at the University of St Andrews in 1939, in which he defends fantasy and sets out his ideas of sub-creation, escape, recovery and eucatastrophe. The second is Leaf by Niggle, a short story about a painter who never finishes his picture of a tree.
George Allen and Unwin published the volume in 1964. A new edition in 1988 added Tolkien's poem Mythopoeia, which answers C.S. Lewis on the truth of myths, and later editions also include The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth.
Tolkien's essay On Fairy-Stories and his short story Leaf by Niggle, gathered in one small volume.
