MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
The Road Goes Ever On is a song cycle by the composer Donald Swann, who set to music poems by Tolkien, most of them from The Lord of the Rings, along with Errantry from The Adventures of Tom Bombadil. The book gives the sheet music, decorated by Tolkien, with notes of his own on the Elvish texts Namárië and A Elbereth Gilthoniel, written out in Tengwar.
Houghton Mifflin published it in Boston in 1967, and George Allen and Unwin in London in 1968. A record of the songs was released at the same time. Later editions added Bilbo's Last Song and Lúthien Tinúviel.
Donald Swann sets Tolkien's poems to music, with Tolkien's own notes on the Elvish songs.
