MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
Written in 1930 in the style of a Breton lay, this poem tells of a lord and his lady of Brittany who long for a child. The lord goes to a witch, a Corrigan, for a potion, and twins are born, but the Corrigan comes to claim her price, with tragic results for both husband and wife.
The poem first appeared in The Welsh Review in 1945 and was then long out of print. Verlyn Flieger edited this first book edition with Tolkien's earlier Corrigan poems, other related material and a prefatory note by Christopher Tolkien. HarperCollins published it in 2016.
A Breton lord makes a pact with a Corrigan to have a child, and must pay her price.
