MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
While still an undergraduate at Oxford, around 1914, Tolkien wrote his own version of the story of Kullervo from the Finnish Kalevala: a young man sold into slavery who, without knowing it, falls in love with his own sister, and whose life ends in tragedy. The story was never finished, but it was the seed of his later tale of Túrin Turambar.
Verlyn Flieger edited it with Tolkien's drafts and notes and with the talks he gave on the Kalevala. HarperCollins published the book in 2015, after a first appearance of the text in the journal Tolkien Studies.
