MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
The Fall of Arthur is an unfinished poem Tolkien began in the nineteen thirties and set aside, probably for The Hobbit. Written in Old English alliterative verse, it tells of King Arthur's last campaign overseas, of Mordred's treachery and his desire for Guinevere, and of Lancelot, in exile far from the king.
Nearly a thousand lines survive. Christopher Tolkien edited them with three essays on the poem's place in Arthurian tradition, on the drafts, and on its links with The Silmarillion and the Isle of Avalon. HarperCollins published the book in 2013.
