MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
On Fairy-Stories is Tolkien's most important essay on fantasy, first given as the Andrew Lang lecture at the University of St Andrews in 1939. This expanded edition, edited by Verlyn Flieger and Douglas A. Anderson, presents the final text with a full commentary and notes.
It also prints the early manuscript versions and drafts of the essay, and traces its history and the many authors and books Tolkien refers to. HarperCollins published it in 2008. It is a key book to understand his ideas on fairy tales and sub-creation.
