MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
This book collects seven of Tolkien's lectures and essays, edited by Christopher Tolkien. It opens with Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics, the 1936 lecture that changed how scholars read the poem, followed by On Translating Beowulf, his lecture on Sir Gawain, On Fairy-Stories, English and Welsh, A Secret Vice on his invented languages, and the Valedictory Address he gave on leaving Oxford.
George Allen and Unwin published it in 1983. Together, the pieces show Tolkien the scholar and give the ideas behind his own fiction.
