Finn and Hengest

Description

Finn and Hengest: The Fragment and the Episode collects Tolkien's lectures on the Finnsburg story, a tale of a fight between Danes and Frisians known from two Old English sources: a short fragment of a poem and an episode sung by a minstrel in Beowulf.

Edited by Alan Bliss from Tolkien's notes and published by George Allen and Unwin in 1982, it gives the texts, translations and a close reading. Tolkien argues that the Hengest of this story is the same Hengest who, according to tradition, led the first Jutes to Britain, and that the quarrel was largely a feud among Jutes fighting on both sides.

Synopsis
