MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
In the nineteen thirties Tolkien wrote two long poems in English retelling the great Norse legend of the Völsungs: the New Lay of the Völsungs and the New Lay of Gudrún. Written in the short alliterative metre of the Old Norse Edda, they tell of Sigurd the dragon slayer, his killing of Fáfnir, his love for the Valkyrie Brynhild, his marriage to Gudrún and the doom that follows them to the court of Atli, King of the Huns.
Christopher Tolkien edited the poems with notes and commentary drawn from his father's lectures on Old Norse. HarperCollins published the book in 2009.
Tolkien's own retelling, in Norse style verse, of the legend of Sigurd the dragon slayer and Gudrún.
