MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
Tolkien finished a prose translation of Beowulf in 1926 but never published it. This book, edited by Christopher Tolkien, prints it at last, together with a commentary drawn from the lectures Tolkien gave at Oxford on the poem, its monsters and its heroes.
It also includes Sellic Spell, a story in which Tolkien imagines the folk tale that may lie behind the Beowulf legend, and two versions of The Lay of Beowulf, a ballad he wrote on the same theme. HarperCollins published the book in 2014.
Tolkien's own translation of Beowulf, with his lecture commentary and the tale Sellic Spell.
