A book of notes on The Lord of the Rings by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull, made to accompany the 50th anniversary edition of the novel published in 2004.

Going through the text chapter by chapter, it explains words and names, points to Tolkien's sources and to earlier drafts, and quotes his letters and unpublished papers. It also prints in full Tolkien's Nomenclature of The Lord of the Rings, the guide he wrote for translators, and a chronology of the writing of the book. It was first published in October 2005 by HarperCollins and Houghton Mifflin, won the Mythopoeic Scholarship Award, and was revised in 2014.
