Description

The Worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien: The Places that Inspired Middle-earth is an illustrated book by John Garth, the author of Tolkien and the Great War. It looks at the real places that most likely inspired Middle-earth, many of them places Tolkien lived in or visited, others taken from history and literature.

It covers the West Midlands and Oxford, where Tolkien spent most of his life, but also places across Britain and abroad. It is illustrated with Tolkien's own drawings, archive pictures, old and new maps and present-day photographs. It was published in 2020 by Frances Lincoln in the UK and Princeton University Press in the US.
