Description

J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Vol. I is a role-playing game published by Interplay in 1990 for MS-DOS, followed by Amiga, PC-98 and FM Towns versions. It adapts The Fellowship of the Ring, the first volume of the novel.

The player starts as Frodo Baggins outside Bag End and gradually gathers the members of the Fellowship. The story can be completed by following the book, but the large world is full of side quests and new characters, such as finding the pieces of Aragorn's broken sword so it can be reforged. Conversations work by typing keywords, and the Nazgûl show up more often at night. Later versions use footage from Ralph Bakshi's 1978 animated film. It was followed in 1992 by Vol. II: The Two Towers.
