MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
The Hobbit is a 1979 radio dramatization of Tolkien's novel produced by The Mind's Eye, the company behind the American radio Lord of the Rings of the same year. Adapted and directed by Bob Lewis, it was broadcast on National Public Radio and released as a set of six one-hour cassettes.
Ray Reinhardt plays Bilbo Baggins, Bernard Mayes is Gandalf, Tom Luce is Thorin, Erik Bauersfeld is Smaug and Gail Chugg is both the narrator and Gollum. Staying close to the book, it takes Bilbo from Bag End through the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood to Smaug's lair and the Battle of Five Armies. It was later reissued on CD, often together with The Lord of the Rings.
Bilbo Baggins joins Thorin's company of dwarves on the road to the Lonely Mountain in this 1979 American radio dramatization.
