Tolkien and the Invention of Myth: A Reader is a collection of essays edited by Jane Chance, a professor of English at Rice University, and published by the University Press of Kentucky in 2004.
The essays look at the ancient sources Tolkien drew on, Greek and Latin, Old Norse, Old English and Finnish, and at how he turned them into the myths of The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. They are grouped in five sections. The contributors include Tom Shippey, Verlyn Flieger, Marjorie Burns, Michael D.C. Drout, Gergely Nagy and Richard C. West.
