MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
A collection of essays edited by Jane Chance, a professor of English at Rice University and the author of several books on Tolkien. It was published by Routledge in 2003.
Fifteen essays look at Tolkien as a scholar of the Middle Ages, and at how that work fed his fiction. They are grouped in four parts: Tolkien as a medieval scholar in his own time; The Lord of the Rings and the medieval texts and myths behind it; medieval theology and iconography in his work; and the medieval roots of his Silmarillion mythology.
Fifteen essays on Tolkien the scholar of the Middle Ages, and how his medieval studies shaped Middle-earth.
