Tolkien’s Gedling: The Birth of a Legend

Description

In late September 1914 the young Tolkien, then an Oxford student, stayed with his aunt Jane Neave at Phoenix Farm in Gedling, near Nottingham. There, on 24 September, he wrote the poem The Voyage of Earendel the Evening Star, often seen as the spark of his whole mythology.

Andrew H. Morton and John Hayes tell the story of that visit and of the Phoenix Farm project, with the changes in Gedling that led to it. The book contains more than thirty previously unpublished photographs and new material about Aunt Jane, whom some readers see as a model for Gandalf. It was published by Brewin Books in 2008 under the title Tolkien's Gedling 1914.
