MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
The full text of The Hobbit with notes by Douglas A. Anderson, an American Tolkien scholar and editor. It was first published in 1988 by Houghton Mifflin, for the 50th anniversary of the American edition of The Hobbit.
The notes explain the changes Tolkien made to the book over the years, in particular the chapter Riddles in the Dark, rewritten so that it fits The Lord of the Rings. They also point to his sources, explain words and names, and show illustrations from translations of the book around the world. A revised and expanded edition followed in 2002, with the original Riddles in the Dark chapter and the Quest of Erebor.
