MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
In The Lord of the Rings: The Mythology of Power, Jane Chance, a medievalist and professor of English at Rice University, studies how power, politics and language work in Tolkien's book. Drawing on the ideas of Michel Foucault, she looks at the forms that domination takes in Middle-earth and at the way the small and ordinary become the heroes of the story.
The book was first published by Twayne in 1992 in its Masterwork Studies series. A revised edition, the one cited by the Tolkien Society, was published by the University Press of Kentucky in 2001.
