MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
The Song of Middle-earth: J.R.R. Tolkien's Themes, Symbols and Myths is a study by David Harvey, a New Zealander who won his country's Mastermind quiz with The Lord of the Rings as his special subject. It was published by George Allen and Unwin in 1985.
Harvey looks at the myths and legends behind The Silmarillion, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, at their main themes and symbols, and at the history Tolkien built for his world. He argues that Tolkien's work is more original than critics had claimed, and that he was trying to create a modern mythology for England.
