MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
Tolkien and Welsh, with the Welsh subtitle Tolkien a Chymraeg, is a collection of essays by Mark T. Hooker, a linguist and specialist in comparative translation who also wrote Tolkien Through Russian Eyes. It was published in 2012 by Llyfrawr, the author's own imprint.
The book tracks the Welsh words and names hidden in Tolkien's legendarium, from the obvious, like Gwynfa, the Welsh word for Paradise, to the Welsh surname behind Took and the Welsh roots proposed for Goldberry, the Brandywine and other names. It also looks at how Sindarin borrows the sound of Welsh. It was invited to enter the Wales Book of the Year competition in 2013.
A linguist hunts for the Welsh words, names and sounds that Tolkien wove into Middle-earth, from the Shire to Sindarin.
