MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
Tolkien and the Study of His Sources: Critical Essays is a collection edited by Jason Fisher, an American independent scholar, and published by McFarland in 2011, with an opening essay by Tom Shippey.
The book looks at the sources Tolkien drew on, from the certain to the merely possible, and at how such research should be done. Its eleven essays explore the medieval and modern texts behind his legendarium, from the Goths and Byzantium to John Buchan and Rider Haggard, and the last one quotes previously unpublished letters by Tolkien. It won the Mythopoeic Scholarship Award for Inklings Studies in 2014.
