MIDDLE-EARTH TIMELINE
The third of Robert S. Blackham's illustrated books on Tolkien, after The Roots of Tolkien's Middle Earth and Tolkien's Oxford. It covers Tolkien's life from 1914 to 1918, with old postcards, maps and photographs of the places and times he went through.
It follows him to the Battle of the Somme in 1916, where he learned of the death of two of his school friends, and to the trench fever he caught in late October 1916, which sent him back to Birmingham by hospital ship and train. Blackham looks at how these experiences fed into The Lord of the Rings. It was published by The History Press in 2011.
Tolkien's war years from 1914 to 1918, from the Somme to the hospital in Birmingham, told with period postcards, maps and photographs.
